Why AM still matters
AM signals travel much further than FM, especially at night, which is why they carry emergency information, long-distance sport and national talk in countries where FM coverage is patchy. The trade is bandwidth: AM is a narrow, mono, noisy medium, which is why music left it decades ago and speech stayed.

The band is shrinking, the stations are not
Several European countries have switched off medium wave entirely, and carmakers have removed AM tuners from some electric vehicles, which caused a public argument in the United States about emergency broadcasting. None of that takes the stations off the air: what disappears is the transmitter, not the programming, and the stream is usually the survivor. In much of Asia, Africa and the Americas, AM remains a primary way people get news.
