Title card for the guide: How to Put Any Radio Station on a Yoto Card, in amber on black with an equaliser motif

Yoto players can play live radio. Beyond the radio in Yoto's own app, Yoto lets you put any station that streams on the internet onto a Make Your Own card, so a child can start it by pushing in a card. You need the station's stream address and a few minutes. The steps follow Yoto's own help page.

What you need

  • A Make Your Own card.
  • Your Yoto account, used with the same email address on the Yoto website and in the Yoto app.
  • The station's stream address. This is the direct link to the live audio, not the station's website. The radio stream URL finder gives you the address the open Radio Browser directory lists for any station in it: type the station's name and copy it.

Step 1: make a playlist with the stream

  1. Go to yotoplay.com/create and sign in with the email address you use in the Yoto app.
  2. Choose Playlist, then Add Playlist, and give the playlist a name.
  3. Tap Add Stream, paste the station's stream address and press Save.

Step 2: link the playlist to a card

  1. In the Yoto app, open Make Your Own and find the new playlist in your library.
  2. Open it, tap the three-dot menu and choose Link to a Card.
  3. Put a Make Your Own card into the player and tap Link in the panel that appears. A red record symbol and then a green tick on the player's display mean the link worked.
  4. Take the card out and put it back in to start the station.

If the station will not play

  • Use the stream address, not the website. A station's home page is not something a player can play.
  • Try another address for the same station. If Yoto says it cannot find a supported audio stream at the address, pick another entry for the same station in the stream URL finder. A plain MP3 or AAC stream is a good first try, rather than an address ending in .m3u8.
  • Check the Wi-Fi. A live station is streamed, so the player has to be online while it plays.
  • The station may have moved its stream. Stations change their addresses from time to time. Look the station up again and put the new address in the playlist.

Choosing stations for children

Live radio plays whatever the station puts on air, including news, talk and adverts, so listen to a station yourself before it goes on a child's card. Radio for kids and family-friendly radio cover stations made for younger listeners and what to look for.

The same stream address works in other places too: on a Wi-Fi radio, in VLC, or on Sonos, as adding a radio station to Sonos by URL shows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put any radio station on a Yoto card?

Yoto says you can use any radio station that has a live stream on the internet. You add its stream address to a Make Your Own playlist on Yoto's website and link the playlist to a card in the Yoto app.

Where do I find a radio station's stream URL?

Type the station's name into 72FM's free radio stream URL finder. It shows the address the open Radio Browser directory lists for the station, with a button to copy it.

Why does Yoto say it couldn't find a supported audio stream?

The address is usually a web page or a stream in a form Yoto cannot use. Pick another entry for the same station in the stream URL finder, starting with a plain MP3 or AAC stream rather than an address ending in .m3u8.

Can I add a podcast to a Yoto card the same way?

Yoto says a single podcast episode works if you have its direct address, but that the method suits radio better, because a podcast card has to be updated for every new episode.
